Asma came into the kitchen where Mona, Shahla and Anisa were helping Mother bake cookies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom! Riaz left my Dragon Ball Zed Manga outside on the porch! It could have gotten wet or dirty! He has no respect for my things!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Riaz had followed Asma into the kitchen\u2026perhaps drawn more by the smell of the cookies than for the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the utmost respect for Dragon Ball Z!\u201d Riaz shouted with a grin, as he saluted the book as if it were a general.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not what respect means! Tell him, Mom!\u201d shouted Asma.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-949 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c-users-user-appdata-local-microsoft-windows-inet-11.jpeg\" alt=\"C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.MSO\\9942D12C.tmp\" width=\"152\" height=\"161\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mother told them all to go sit down at the dining room table as she put some of the fresh baked cookies onto a plate and carried them over to the waiting children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRespect: That is a very important word with a wide and deep meaning,\u201d said Mother as she looked at her children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsma, what did you mean when you said we should have \u2018respect\u2019 for a material object?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should take care of it because it\u2019s not HIS!\u201d said Asma angrily.<\/p>\n<p>Mona spoke up, \u201cAsma, does that mean it would be okay for you to leave the book outside or tear the pages on purpose? Mom and Dad bought it for you: doesn\u2019t that mean you should take care of it, too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, of course!\u201d said Asma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d said Mother, \u201clet\u2019s think about that\u2026 Everything we have, we received, right? Maybe we received it from our parents, or from the store keeper\u2026 and before that from the people that made the \u2018thing\u2019 we have, and before that, it probably came from some part nature, and all nature comes from God\u2026. So when you keep on going back to the origin of anything, everything comes from God!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The children all looked at each other in surprise. They considered each object they looked at and tried to think of where it came from originally.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-868 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/aclip-art-wooden-tableaarcaaecurrencyccentcae.jpeg\" alt=\"\u00e3\u0080\u008cclip art; wooden table\u00e3\u0080\u008d\u00e3\u0081\u00ae\u00e7\u0094\u00bb\u00e5\u0083\u008f\u00e6\u00a4\u009c\u00e7\u00b4\u00a2\u00e7\u00b5\u0090\u00e6\u009e\u009c\" width=\"191\" height=\"138\" \/> Finally, Shahla said, \u201cYeah, Dad bought this table from the store, but the store bought it from the factory, and the factory got the wood from the forest, and God made the trees!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you think about it, that goes for everything, doesn\u2019t it,\u201d agreed Asma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo \u2018Respect\u2019 means treating every object, and every living thing, and especially every person, with gentleness and kindness&#8230;because everything on earth is a gift<br \/>to<br \/>us from God,\u201d explained Mother. \u201cAnd showing respect is kind of like showing gratitude to God for what we have received.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnisa, Gratitude means being thankful,\u201d explained Mona. She thought a moment, then added, \u201cSo Gratitude is related to Respect!\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-951 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c-users-user-appdata-local-microsoft-windows-inet-12-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.MSO\\E6014C1A.tmp\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Every nodded their heads in agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means we have to take care of the earth, and not waste anything, and never litter and throw garbage on our beautiful world,\u201d added Mother<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we should be nice and gentle to all the animals, and even the bugs! Right, Mommy! \u2018Cause I am really thankful God gave us those!\u201d said little Anisa, who loved anything that moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s right, Anisa! God gave all creatures life. It is something only God can do. Another import aspect of respect is how we treat people,\u201d said Mother. \u201cAnyone have ideas on this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should treat our teachers with respect,\u201d put in Mona. \u201cThat means listening to them and obeying them and talking nicely to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asma added, \u201cAnd policemen too\u2014anyone in authority.\u201d Asma grinned and looked at Mother, \u201cI guess that means parents, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mother smiled and nodded, \u201cHaving respect also means not backbiting\u2014not saying bad things about teachers or parents or policemen or rulers&#8230;or, anybody\u2026when they are not around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c-users-user-appdata-local-microsoft-windows-inet-3.jpeg\" alt=\"C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.MSO\\FEED2A4F.tmp\" width=\"194\" height=\"138\" \/>Mother thought a minute. \u201cShould we only respect people with authority over us? Should we also show respect for people our same age, or those younger than us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d said Shahla, \u201cbut you do it differently! You can\u2019t obey a little kid!\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-876 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/aclip-art-respect-for-insectsaarcaaecurrencyccent.png\" alt=\"\u00e3\u0080\u008cclip art; respect for insects\u00e3\u0080\u008d\u00e3\u0081\u00ae\u00e7\u0094\u00bb\u00e5\u0083\u008f\u00e6\u00a4\u009c\u00e7\u00b4\u00a2\u00e7\u00b5\u0090\u00e6\u009e\u009c\" width=\"98\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr a notebook that you respect either!\u201d said Riaz laughing! \u201cYes, Mr. Dragon Ball Z Manga! I will obey your command!\u201d he said, as he saluted the book again. Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Shahla continued, \u201cYou treat little kids with respect by talking nicely to them, and not yelling at them\u2026even when you want to,\u201d she said, looking at little Anisa.\u201cSo, parents need to show respect for their children too!\u201d said Riaz with a grin.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-882\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/aclip-art-respect-for-peopleaarcaaecurrencyccentc.png\" alt=\"\u00e3\u0080\u008cclip art; respect for people\u00e3\u0080\u008d\u00e3\u0081\u00ae\u00e7\u0094\u00bb\u00e5\u0083\u008f\u00e6\u00a4\u009c\u00e7\u00b4\u00a2\u00e7\u00b5\u0090\u00e6\u009e\u009c\" width=\"112\" height=\"147\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-880\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/aclip-art-respect-for-peopleaarcaaecurrencyccentc.jpeg\" alt=\"\u00e3\u0080\u008cclip art; respect for people\u00e3\u0080\u008d\u00e3\u0081\u00ae\u00e7\u0094\u00bb\u00e5\u0083\u008f\u00e6\u00a4\u009c\u00e7\u00b4\u00a2\u00e7\u00b5\u0090\u00e6\u009e\u009c\" width=\"111\" height=\"148\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, absolutely!\u201d agreed Mother, smiling at Riaz\u2026. \u201cNo matter how hard you make it for us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All the children laughed, knowing what a troublemaker Riaz could be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach little person has a soul, just like a grownup, that gets hurt when treated unkindly,\u201d put in Asma. \u201cRemember one of the Dr. Suess books: <strong><em>A Person&#8217;s a Person, No Matter How Small.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-884 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c-users-user-appdata-local-microsoft-windows-inet-4.jpeg\" alt=\"C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.MSO\\F2740D0B.tmp\" width=\"131\" height=\"126\" \/>\u201cVery wise words!\u201d agreed Mother. \u201cEven a small child has a soul that reflects the attributes of God.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/aclip-art-respectaarcaaecurrencyccentcae-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\u00e3\u0080\u008cclip art; respect\u00e3\u0080\u008d\u00e3\u0081\u00ae\u00e7\u0094\u00bb\u00e5\u0083\u008f\u00e6\u00a4\u009c\u00e7\u00b4\u00a2\u00e7\u00b5\u0090\u00e6\u009e\u009c\" width=\"131\" height=\"130\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mother continued: \u201cSo, Respect is also related to Humility. Humility means thinking\u2026 knowing\u2026 that the other person is of more worth than you. You are less, they are more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Mom!\u201d Mona put in. \u201cWhat about Self Worth? That\u2019s important, too! Shouldn\u2019t we respect ourselves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, of course,\u201d agreed Mother. \u201cWe were created by God and God\u2019s light shines through our soul. That is our worth. That is why we take care of our bodies and minds. But we must remember that we are not of more worth than anyone else!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-888 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c-users-user-appdata-local-microsoft-windows-inet-5.jpeg\" alt=\"C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.MSO\\9ACDF651.tmp\" width=\"218\" height=\"163\" \/>\u201cAnd Leaders should remember that, too,\u201d put in Mona. \u201cWe learned at Summer School that Leaders, like Kings and Presidents, are the servants of their people. And everyone in authority should be humble!\u201d<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-890\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/aclip-art-natureaarcaaecurrencyccentcae.jpeg\" alt=\"\u00e3\u0080\u008cclip art; nature\u00e3\u0080\u008d\u00e3\u0081\u00ae\u00e7\u0094\u00bb\u00e5\u0083\u008f\u00e6\u00a4\u009c\u00e7\u00b4\u00a2\u00e7\u00b5\u0090\u00e6\u009e\u009c\" width=\"149\" height=\"184\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember!\u201d shouted Riaz. \u201c\u2018Abdu\u2019l-Baha\u2019 explained that the rain falls on the top of the mountain, and the water flows down the river to the ocean, so the lowest point collects all the water\u2026that means the humble person collects all the bounties of<br \/>God!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood job, Riaz!\u201d exclaimed Mother. \u201cSon, you always seem to surprise me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, teasing and making everyone angry one minute, and being surprisingly wise, the next!\u201d laughed Mona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-892\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c-users-user-appdata-local-microsoft-windows-inet-6.jpeg\" alt=\"C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.MSO\\93CF682D.tmp\" width=\"250\" height=\"160\" \/>Isn\u2019t that what \u2018Wise Guy\u2019 means?\u201d laughed Asma. And everyone else laughed, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you guys think of any other examples of showing respect?\u201d asked Mother.<\/p>\n<p>The children thought a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then Anisa said, \u201cWhen we catch a bug and put it outside instead of spraying it dead!\u201d Everyone laughed and agreed.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-898\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/c-users-user-appdata-local-microsoft-windows-inet-7.jpeg\" alt=\"C:\\Users\\User\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.MSO\\F24D57C3.tmp\" width=\"103\" height=\"98\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Mona gave the homeless man the healthy drink and didn\u2019t let him know it was on purpose, she didn\u2019t want to embarrass him. That was showing respect, too,\u201d said Riaz. And we can all be more careful to be respectful of everything on God\u2019s wonderful planet. We can also help remind other people <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahaijp.org\/daystar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/aclip-art-kids-eating-cookiesaarcaaecurrencyccent.jpeg\" alt=\"\u00e3\u0080\u008cclip art; kids eating That is our worth. That is why we take care of our bodies and minds.
